AND ALL THAT
The Story of American English
History of Colonization
The first permanent English settlement in North America dates from 1607
The hundred or so colonists called their settlement Jamestown (after James I) and the area Virginia (after Elizabeth, the “Virgin Queen”)
Further settlements followed along the coast, and also on nearby islands, such as Bermuda
In 1620, the first group of Puritans arrived on the Mayflower
Prevented by storms from reaching Virginia, they landed at Cape Cod Bay, and established a settlement at Plimoth (now Plymouth, Massachusetts)
By 1640, about 15,000 immigrants had come to the Massachusetts area
