History of Colonization

 
  • The first permanent English settlement in North America dates from 1607

 
  • The hundred or so colonists called their settlement Jamestown (after James I) and the area Virginia (after Elizabeth, the “Virgin Queen”)

 
  • Further settlements followed along the coast, and also on nearby islands, such as Bermuda

 
  • In 1620, the first group of Puritans arrived on the Mayflower

  • Prevented by storms from reaching Virginia, they landed at Cape Cod Bay, and established a settlement at Plimoth (now Plymouth, Massachusetts)

 
  • By 1640, about 15,000 immigrants had come to the Massachusetts area
