The 200 Banned Words


The Local Government Association (LGA) has published a list of 200 words that all public sector bodies should avoid when talking to people about the work they do and the services they provide.

Included on the list of banned words are ‘holistic governance’, ‘synergies’, ‘mainstreaming’, and ‘predictors of beaconicity’.


Some councils have already taken steps to ensure they use plain English. Harrow council recently outlawed the use of seven phrases and descriptions for its customer-facing staff. ‘Civil enforcement officers’ are now more traditional ‘traffic wardens’ and ‘school crossing patrollers’ have been replaced by ‘lollipop men and women’.
