The lyrical and patriotic
song "Katyusha" (Катюша
or Катя
are endearing forms of the feminine
name Екатерина,
or Catherine) had been written before the war and was highly popular
with the Russian soldiers throughout the war years. When the new
formidable barrage rockets augmented the Red Army’s arsenal, they
were immediately nicknamed Katyushas, giving rise to
frontline versions of the song, such as this one:

During the war the song’s
popularity spread beyond the borders of the Soviet Union: it was
well known among the fighters of the Resistance movement in France,
and was used as an anthem by the Italian guerrillas fighting against
fascism.
